With insightful and witty banter, Dr. Standring will lead the evening’s discussion on Elizabeth Fremantle’s historical novel about the Italian seicento artist Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653). After beginning the event with a lecture that revolves around Artemisia’s art and her portrayal as a strong female artist, he will then open the discourse as to how the author brings history to life through an artist who challenged societal norms and sought justice. How Artemisia fought for artistic freedom and survival after trauma in 17th-century Rome, thereby inspiring themes of power, art as rebellion, and female perseverance, will figure prominently after having read this passionate and moving book. Delicious, heavy hors d’oeuvres and cash bar provided.
